3 · Ducting

Ducted

Air leaves the building

  • Smoke and steam
  • Heat
  • Humidity
  • Gas combustion by-products
  • Needs a route to an outside wall or roof
Run a duct if you physically can.

Ductless

Air is filtered and returned

  • Grease
  • Most odour
  • No duct work
  • Heat
  • Humidity
  • Carbon monoxide from gas
Fine for induction. Not for daily high-heat gas.

11 Common questions

What CFM do I need for a 30-inch gas range?

Start at 900 CFM. Burner BTU divided by 100 gives 600 for a typical range, and ducting takes 30–40% of that away.

Do I need make-up air?

Above 400 CFM, most US jurisdictions require it. Confirm with your local building department before you order, not after.

Can a ductless hood remove smoke?

It removes grease and most odour, not heat, humidity or gas combustion by-products. Fine for induction; not for daily high-heat gas.

How high should it be mounted?

24–30 in above electric, 27–33 in above gas. The manual for your specific model always overrides the general rule.

What duct size?

6 in round minimum above 600 CFM, 8 in above 1,200 CFM. A 4 in duct left from an old microwave will throttle any modern hood.

How often do filters need cleaning?

Mesh and baffle filters go in the dishwasher every 2–4 weeks. Charcoal cartridges are replaced every 3–6 months and are not washable.
